16-year-old charged as adult in Schnucks shooting that injured teen

URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) — A 16-year-old Champaign teen has been formally charged as an adult in connection with a shooting at Schnucks on Mattis Avenue that left an 18-year-old injured.

Daelon Walton appeared in court Monday for a detention hearing, where Judge Brett Olmstead denied his release pending trial. Walton faces a Class X felony charge of aggravated battery with a firearm and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on May 28.

Police say the shooting occurred Tuesday night when Walton allegedly fired on the victim in the store parking lot. The 18-year-old victim was struck at least once but drove a short distance from the scene before receiving medical attention. Authorities confirmed the injuries are not life-threatening.
