CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The Campus Bike Center, Urbana Bike Project, and Urbana Champaign Independent Media Center are hosting the annual bike giveaway for kids and pre-teens later this month.

The giveaway will take place at the Urbana Champaign Independent Media Center, located at 202 S Broadway Avenue in Urbana, and will take place on Saturday, December 20 from 1 to 3 p.m.

The event looks to provide access to bikes for underserved communities, and started in 2020 as a response to the pandemic. Since then, the event has distributed nearly 300 bikes to children in the community.

Bikes are available for ages 1-10 (approximately), while supplies last, and first come, first served. There is a one bike allowance per child and the child must be present to pick out their bike.

Organizers are still looking for more bikes to refurbish. Those wanting to donate a bike for the event (any size and condition can be repaired), are asked to drop them off at the Campus Bike Center located at 51 East Gregory Drive in Champaign, or the Urbana Bike Project at 202 South Broadway Avenue in Urbana until December 19 at 6 p.m..

To donate and arrange a drop-off, please call 217-469-5126 or email contact@thebikeproject.org.
