CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, Ill. (Chambana Today) — After a winter storm dumped several inches of snow across the area, Champaign-Urbana residents endured dangerously cold wind chills as arctic air settled into Central Illinois late Sunday and early Monday.

Meteorologists reported that wind chills across Champaign County dropped well below zero overnight, making Monday morning the coldest period following the storm. The extreme cold came as crews and drivers were still navigating snow-covered and icy roadways left behind by the system.

While snowfall tapered off by Sunday afternoon, forecasters said the cold air remained firmly in place, keeping daytime highs in the teens and overnight lows near or below zero. Gusty winds combined with the low temperatures to produce wind chills that posed a risk of frostbite for anyone spending extended time outdoors.

Local officials urged residents to limit outdoor exposure, dress in layers, and check on vulnerable neighbors as the bitter cold continued. Drivers were also advised to allow extra travel time and keep emergency supplies in their vehicles due to lingering hazardous conditions.
