Blizzard-like conditions hammer Champaign County: Snow, sub-zero temps, and dangerous travel

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (Chambana Today) — A powerful winter storm has settled over Champaign County this weekend, bringing heavy snowfall, biting cold, and treacherous travel conditions to the region. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning through Sunday evening, with widespread snow expected and accumulations of several inches possible across the county.

Temperatures in Champaign County have plunged well below freezing, with current readings around 8 °F and wind chills making it feel even colder. Gusty winds combined with falling snow are causing blowing and drifting, reducing visibility and making roads slick and hazardous.

Officials warn that travel could be very difficult or even dangerous through the weekend. The Illinois Department of Transportation and State Police advise residents to avoid unnecessary travel, and local public safety agencies are urging drivers to use caution if they must be on the roads.

Local emergency shelters are available for those in need, and residents are encouraged to check on vulnerable neighbors, especially as wind chill values plunge into the dangerous sub-zero range.
