CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — Just five days after retiring as Montana’s head football coach, Bobby Hauck has returned to the sidelines as the new defensive coordinator at the University of Illinois.

Hauck, 61, spent 14 seasons leading the Grizzlies, winning a Big Sky-record 151 games, eight conference titles, and making 13 FCS playoff appearances, including four national championship games. Known for his 3-3-5 defensive scheme, Hauck brings a reputation for aggressive defense and player development to the Illini program.

Illinois head coach Bret Bielema said Hauck’s experience and style will bring a fresh energy to the team. “He is a family man with incredible attention to detail and a great ability to teach the game,” Bielema said.

Hauck expressed excitement about joining Illinois. “Coach Bielema is one of the great head coaches in all of football, and I am extremely excited to work for him and the student-athletes and staff here,” Hauck said.

Meanwhile, Montana has named wide receivers coach Bobby Kennedy as Hauck’s replacement.
