CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) — Approximately 450 students living in Snyder Hall at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign will be relocated following what officials described as a “catastrophic flood” over the weekend.
According to a university news release, the flooding occurred Sunday and caused significant damage to critical building systems, including elevators, water heaters, card access systems and data infrastructure. Officials said no student personal belongings were impacted.
University staff determined that repairs cannot be completed before the end of the semester, prompting the decision to relocate all residents. Students will be moved to other campus housing between Saturday, March 21, and Monday, March 23.
Housing officials noted that students should not expect to remain with their current roommates during the reassignment process.
Students reassigned to higher-cost housing will not be charged above their current Snyder Hall rate. Those placed in temporary housing will receive a 50% reduction in room costs.
Additional support, including curb-to-curb moving assistance, will be provided to students relocating to different areas of campus. University officials said more information about move-in scheduling is available online.
The university has not released details on what caused the flooding.
