CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The Salvation Army in Central Illinois is making a plea to residents to support their neighbors this holiday season as heavy snowfall and cold temperatures affect fundraising efforts.

Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign has been severely affected due to the weather. A press release shared that in many areas across the region, there have been multiple days when Salvation Army Red Kettles have had reduced hours or been pulled entirely for the safety of the ringers.

With less than 10 days to go in the annual Red Kettle Christmas Campaign, many Salvation Army campaigns are experiencing a shortfall in donations that help fund critical social services to those in need.

“During extreme winter weather, individuals who are struggling to stay in their homes or keep it warm, our mission of Doing the Most Good is more important than ever,” Salvation Army said.

“In treacherous weather, people rely on The Salvation Army even more,” said Major Caleb Senn, The Salvation Army North and Central Illinois general secretary. “When the weather is too harsh to support an outdoor kettle, we fall further behind in our fundraising goal.”

The money raised in Red Kettles funds Salvation Army year-round programs and services, including shelters, food pantries, mobile feeding, after-school programs, emergency utility assistance, and so much more.
