CHAMPAIGN TOWNSHIP, Ill. (Chambana Today) — Devante Gathings, 31, of Champaign, was arrested on December 8, 2025, after a series of threatening actions at Kraft located at 1701 W. Bradley in Champaign Township. At approximately 7:30 p.m., deputies responded to a report of threats made by Gathings, who was working as a delivery driver for a food service.

Gathings threatened to “shoot up” the business after being denied entry by Kraft’s security. Upon arrival, deputies attempted to lawfully detain Gathings, who resisted arrest. A physical altercation ensued, during which Gathings wrapped his arm around a deputy’s neck, an act that was perceived by the deputy as an attempt to choke him.

Despite the physical struggle, deputies and Champaign Police Department officers were able to take Gathings into custody without further escalation or injury. The deputy involved in the altercation did not suffer serious injuries.

Following the investigation, Gathings was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault, Intimidation, Aggravated Battery to a Peace Officer, Aggravated Resisting Arrest, and Aggravated Driving Under the Influence. He was also found to have an outstanding arrest warrant from Iroquois County.

The other individual involved in the incident was arrested by Champaign Police Department for an unrelated case.
