CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The City of Champaign has declared the sidewalk snow and ice removal requirement in effect for the Downtown, Midtown, and Campustown areas following the snowfall on Saturday, Dec. 13, which left at least two inches of snow on the ground.

As per city ordinance, property owners within these areas are required to clear their sidewalks within 24 hours of the Public Works Director’s declaration. The period for compliance begins at 9 a.m. on Sunday, December 14, 2025, and sidewalks must be cleared by 9 a.m. on Monday, December 15.

Sidewalks must be cleared to a width of at least 48 inches or the width of the sidewalk, whichever is less. Property owners with corner lots are reminded to clear the ramps to ensure a continuous path from block to block. If sidewalks are not cleared by the deadline, the City may clear them at the property owner’s expense.

The City appreciates the cooperation of property owners in ensuring the safety of pedestrians and those using alternative transportation. To assist property owners, a map of the Downtown and Campustown areas, along with full details of the Sidewalk Snow Removal Ordinance, can be found on the City’s website: champaignil.gov/snow.

In addition, the City reminds all residents and businesses to avoid placing snow cleared from their property into City streets, as it can create hazards for vehicles. All residents and businesses throughout Champaign are also encouraged to clear their sidewalks for safer pedestrian and accessible travel, especially along designated Safe Routes to School, where snow removal is particularly important for the safe passage of students and parents.
