Champaign police seek suspect in Best Buy identity theft, credit fraud case

CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — Champaign Police are asking for the public’s help identifying a man who used a stolen identity to open multiple credit accounts and purchase thousands of dollars worth of electronics from a local Best Buy in March.

According to police, the incident occurred on March 20, 2026, at approximately 1 p.m. at the Best Buy located at 2117 North Prospect Avenue. The suspect entered the store and applied for several credit accounts using a victim’s stolen personal information. He then used those accounts to purchase multiple cell phones and other electronic devices. The victim later received credit card statements totaling several thousand dollars.

The suspect was captured on store surveillance video and is described as a heavy-set Black male wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black jeans. He left the store on foot.

Champaign Police are asking anyone who recognizes the suspect or has information about the case to come forward.
