Construction worker killed in overnight crash on Interstate 74 in Champaign County

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, IL (Chambana Today) — A construction worker was killed in an overnight crash in a work zone on eastbound Interstate 74 in Champaign County, prompting a lengthy highway closure and major traffic delays this morning.

Authorities said the crash happened in the eastbound lanes of I-74 within an active construction area. Emergency crews responded to the scene overnight, where one construction worker was pronounced dead.

As investigators worked at the scene, eastbound I-74 remained closed. Traffic was being diverted onto southbound Interstate 57, while the ramp from I-57 back to eastbound I-74 was also shut down.

Officials warned motorists to expect delays lasting several hours and urged drivers to seek alternate routes through the area.
