DANVILLE, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The Danville Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire at 20 Iowa Street on Saturday, December 14, 2025, around 12:19 p.m. After receiving reports of a house fire, fire crews rushed to the scene, where they encountered heavy flames engulfing a vacant residence.

Firefighters immediately began fire suppression efforts and conducted a primary search, confirming that the building was unoccupied. The freezing temperatures and icy conditions posed additional challenges, but crews worked tirelessly to bring the blaze under control.

A total of 19 firefighters responded to the fire, with off-duty personnel called back to assist due to the fire’s duration and severity. In an effort to ensure their safety and allow for recovery, the City of Danville dispatched a bus to the scene, providing a warming center for firefighters working in the extreme cold.

Assistant Chief Jerry Sparks highlighted the challenges posed by the winter conditions, saying, “The extreme weather conditions presented numerous unique challenges. But, despite multiple falls due to icy conditions, there were no injuries reported.” Sparks also reported a close call when a partial roof collapse occurred as firefighters were evacuating the building, though no injuries were sustained.

The fire was later determined to be incendiary, and fire investigators are continuing to work with relevant agencies to determine the cause of the blaze. As of this morning, fire crews remain on-site to extinguish remaining hot spots and ensure the fire is fully contained.
