CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — At 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday, January 21, a fire broke out in the 900 block of North Gregory Street, which was responded to by the Urbana Fire Department.

Engine 251, stationed on Vine Street, arrived on scene within four minutes and observed smoke coming from the front door of a single-story residence, which confirmed a working structure fire. Engine 251 made entry and initiated fire suppression operations.

Additional responding crews established a water supply, provided ventilation, and conducted a primary search of the structure. Firefighters completed a search to confirm that no occupants were inside, and performed overhaul operations to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.

A total of 25 personnel from the Urbana and Champaign Fire Departments responded to the incident, and the fire was brought under control within 10 minutes. Crews remained on scene for approximately one hour, and there were no injuries resulting in the fire.

The Urbana Fire Department’s investigation team is conducting a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the fire, which remains undetermined at this time, and is pending further investigation.

The Urbana Fire Department reminds residents that working smoke detectors provide early warning and save lives — please take a moment to ensure yours are working properly.
