CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — Illinois assistant running backs coach James White has accepted the head coaching position at Benet Academy in Lisle, Illinois, the school announced Thursday. White will remain with the University of Illinois through the end of the 2025 season before transitioning to his new role.

Illinois head coach Bret Bielema praised White, calling him “a proven leader who will make a positive impact on the lives of young athletes” and noting White’s impressive growth from standout player to skilled coach.

White’s football career includes eight seasons in the NFL with the New England Patriots, where he earned three Super Bowl championships and played a pivotal role in the team’s historic Super Bowl LI comeback win. He also played under Bielema at Wisconsin, helping the Badgers to three Big Ten titles and three Rose Bowl appearances.

White expressed gratitude for his time at Illinois and excitement for the opportunity at Benet Academy, saying he looks forward to building relationships within the school and local community. A native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, White played high school football at St. Thomas Aquinas, one of the nation’s premier prep programs.
