SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is now accepting applications for its 2025-26 Snowbird Program, offering seasonal positions for snowplow drivers and maintenance support staff to help keep the state’s roads clear and safe during the winter months.

The program is ideal for those seeking extra income or looking for a pathway to full-time employment with the state. Both full-time temporary and hourly on-call positions are available. “Snowbirds play a critical role in keeping Illinois moving and the public safe during winter,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Gia Biagi. “If you’re interested in a good-paying job that can open the door to permanent work and a career at IDOT, get your application in today!”

Snowbirds help maintain more than 45,000 lane miles across the state, responding to snow-and-ice removal needs and other emergency maintenance during nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Full-time temporary salary: $6,044/month

  • Hourly on-call wage: $27.79/hour

Minimum Requirements:

  • Valid Class A or B CDL with endorsements (X or N) and no airbrake restrictions

  • Must pass a pre-employment physical, vision test, drug and alcohol screening, and background check

How to Apply:

Applications are due by Friday, August 22 and must be submitted at https://illinois.jobs2web.com. Type your preferred county into the search bar to view open positions. Spots are limited and maintenance yard postings close as they are filled, so applying early is recommended.

IDOT strongly encourages veterans to apply.
