Local roofing expert urges homeowners to schedule Fall roof inspections before winter hits

TUSCOLA, Ill. (Chambana Today) — As winter approaches, homeowners are being urged to schedule routine roof inspections to prevent minor issues from turning into major headaches. Brett Adkisson, owner of Savior Roofing in Tuscola and Mattoon, says late fall is the ideal time to check for damage before snow, ice, and freezing temperatures make repairs more challenging.

“Fall weather roof inspections are important before winter brings snow, ice, and freezing temps,” Adkisson said. “If repairs are needed for missing shingles, flashing issues, or clogged gutters, it’s important to address them before Old Man Winter arrives.”

According to Adkisson, many homeowners overlook their roofs until a problem becomes obvious. But routine inspections can dramatically extend a roof’s lifespan by catching small issues early. He compares the practice to annual furnace checkups. “Just like you don’t want your furnace going out on the coldest day of the year, your roof is no different,” he said.

A standard fall inspection includes checking shingles or metal panels, examining roof penetrations and flashings, evaluating chimney conditions, and ensuring gutters and drains are free of leaves and debris. Flashings and pipe boots, in particular, often fail before the rest of the roof system and can lead to leaks or even structural damage if ignored.

Adkisson also emphasized the risks of clogged gutters during winter. “Roofs are not swimming pools,” he said. “Standing roof water from clogged gutters or roof drains can cause significant roof damage.”

For homes with low-slope or flat roofs, clear drains and well-sealed flashings are especially important. And although repairs can still be made in winter, harsh conditions often require temporary fixes until warmer weather allows permanent solutions.

Savior Roofing highlights its 35 years of experience and stresses that evaluations are done by trained project managers who are seasoned roofers. The company documents issues with photos and videos to avoid upselling or unnecessary repairs.

“We want you to get as much life as you can out of your existing roof,” Adkisson said. “Simple inspections and minor repairs can drastically extend your roof’s life expectancy and save you thousands of dollars.”
