CHAMPAIGN, IL. (Chambana Today) — Safer Internet Day, launched in 2004 and now observed in more than 170 countries, encourages conversations about online safety and highlights simple steps everyone can take to protect themselves — and others — online.

In today’s always-connected world, online safety matters more than ever. Whether you’re working, shopping, learning, or connecting with others, small actions can reduce risk and strengthen your digital security.

Simple ways to stay safer online:

  • Use strong, unique passwords for every account. Avoid common or reused passwords, and consider using a password manager.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA/2FA) whenever possible to add an extra layer of protection.
  • Watch for phishing and scams. Be cautious with unexpected emails, texts, or messages, especially those asking for personal information.
  • Keep devices and software updated to fix security gaps and protect against new threats.
  • Use antivirus and anti-malware tools on computers and mobile devices.
  • Be cautious on public Wi-Fi. Avoid accessing sensitive accounts and look for secure websites that start with https://.
  • Limit what you share online by reviewing privacy settings and thinking before posting.
  • Download apps and software only from trusted, official sources.
  • Stay informed, as scams and online threats continue to evolve.

Practicing good digital habits helps protect your personal information and reduces the risk of cyber threats for everyone.
