CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office released the results of special traffic enforcement details conducted during December as part of statewide traffic safety campaigns.

Deputies conducted targeted patrols on three occasions totaling 12 hours. During those enforcement efforts, officers made 17 traffic stops, issuing five citations for speeding, six citations for failure to wear a seat belt, and six traffic violation warnings.

The patrols were part of the Illinois Department of Transportation’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Drive High. Get a DUI.” and “Click It or Ticket” initiatives, which aim to reduce crashes and roadway fatalities.

According to the sheriff’s office, the enforcement efforts focused on behaviors most commonly linked to serious and fatal crashes, including speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving and failure to use seat belts. Similar enforcement efforts are planned throughout 2026.

The campaign was supported by federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and conducted as part of Illinois’ “It’s Not a Game” statewide media outreach program.
