CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — A University of Illinois police officer was arrested Sunday following a reported domestic incident in Champaign, according to local authorities.

Officers with the Champaign Police Department responded shortly after 1 p.m. March 15 to the 2800 block of Prairie Meadow Drive for a report of a domestic disturbance. At the scene, police arrested 38-year-old Joseph Cassidy.

Details surrounding the incident have not been released.

Champaign Police said the case has been referred to the Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office for review. However, officials with that office said Cassidy has not been formally charged and was released from custody.

The University of Illinois Division of Public Safety confirmed Cassidy is employed as a police officer with the department but declined to comment further, citing it as a personnel matter. As of Wednesday afternoon, Cassidy remained listed in the university’s staff directory.

The investigation remains ongoing.
