UPDATE: 16-year-old arrested in connection to January shooting

CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — Urbana Police Detectives provided an update in connection with a a shooting that left a 14-year-old male with non-life-threatening injuries. A 16-year-old male was arrested for the incident, which occurred on January 29, 2026.

The arrest was made in the 1-100 block of East University Avenue in Champaign, and the teen has been charged with Aggravated Battery with a Firearm.

The arrest follows an investigation into an incident in which the teen approached a parked vehicle in the 1100 block of Hill Street in Urbana and discharged a firearm, striking a passenger in the vehicle. The victim was treated at a local hospital and has since been released. The arrest comes after an extensive investigation by the Urbana Police Department. The investigation is still ongoing, and detectives continue to seek information from the public regarding the incident.

The Urbana Police Department reminds the public that all individuals are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
