CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — An 18-year-old Urbana man has been arrested in connection with a weekend shooting in Campustown that left one man seriously injured.

According to the University of Illinois Police Department, Decoven Stephens was taken into custody Monday after investigators identified him as a suspect in the October 18 shooting near the intersection of Fifth and Green Streets. Officers responded to reports of gunfire around 12:28 a.m. and found a male victim suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim, who is not affiliated with the university, underwent surgery and is recovering.

Police said the shooting followed a verbal altercation involving multiple individuals. Eyewitness accounts and video footage helped detectives quickly identify Stephens, leading to an arrest warrant and a search of his residence.

The warrant was executed with assistance from the METRO team and the Champaign County Street Crimes Task Force. Police say they recovered multiple pieces of evidence, including the firearm believed to have been used.

Stephens is currently being held at the Champaign County Jail and faces a charge of attempted first-degree murder. His arraignment is scheduled for Monday.
